THE IB DIPLOMA PROGRAMME AT GIIS

We are an authorised Singapore IB school offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in Singapore for the last 17 years, to Grade 11 and 12 students.

The IB Diploma programme encourages students to think critically, innovate and create, research, maintain an open, inclusive mind, use technology effectively and understand what it means to be a global citizen.

Secondary students at GIIS develop the above skills through the IB programme while being taught to value diversity, respect others’ opinions, have compassion for others and take responsibility to care for our planet. With the support and mentorship of our dedicated teachers, we help our students become future-ready.

*GIIS East Coast campus is now an authorized IB school for the IB Diploma Programme. Admissions open for August 2023.

IB Curriculum

The IBDP, popularly referred to as a pre-university qualification, encourages a breadth and depth of knowledge, and importantly, application of that knowledge to real world situations. The curriculum includes six subjects that students choose from six broad subject groups. They develop specialised knowledge and skills in topics that interest them the most. Three of these subjects are taken at a Higher level and three are taken at a Standard level.

The IBDP curriculum also includes the DP core - which comprises Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service).

DP core

The three core elements of the IBDP enable students to apply their acquired knowledge and skills to real-world scenarios and broaden their educational experience. It allows students to reflect on prior knowledge, dig deeper into their areas of interest, conduct their own research and engage in community service.

Theory of Knowledge

In this core DP component, students are encouraged to ask questions, engage in critical thinking, understand ambiguity, and manage uncertainty when dealing with questions that have multiple possible answers. Assessments in the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) include both internal and external components.

Extended Essay

Through the Extended Essay (EE), students develop skills in conducting independent research, drawing conclusions, managing their time and communicating ideas. It provides an opportunity to students to go deep in an area of their interest. The culmination is a 4,000-word essay.

Creativity, Activity, Service

In the Creativity, Activity and Service component (CAS), students actively participate in collaborative projects to explore solutions to problems, adapt to new roles and embrace challenges. They typically take up service projects, develop a sense of community and responsibility towards the environment.

Bilingual Diploma

Besides offering the standard IBDP to secondary students, GIIS offers the Bilingual Diploma, which includes additional language requirements. Students can earn a Bilingual Diploma by completing two languages selected from Subject Group 1 (Studies in Language and Literature).  A student must successfully complete one of the English options from Group 1 AND one of the French / Spanish options from Group 1 to obtain the Bilingual Diploma.

Our Facilities

With 40+ skills-based studios, digital classrooms and well-designed Learning Commons and Student Innovation Rooms, the GIIS SMART Campus stands out as an exemplary IB school in Singapore where IB Diploma students can gain maximum benefits in their learning journey. Technology adds sheen to our educational offerings, while our award-winning holistic framework called 9GEMS adds to the depth of learning students experience during their two year programme.

Data Analytics at GIIS

GIIS chain of schools in Singapore has a unique methodology to check the academic and non-academic progress of our students. We have devised methods and installed platforms which give us raw data on students’ performances inside and outside the classroom.

Data Analytics in academics at GIIS is called the 7S method, in which teachers and coordinators gather stats on a student’s marks in seven different areas of development. This includes school, segment, section, subject, subject-teacher, student and summary.

Data Analytics in Sports is called SPEDAS, where devices on playgrounds and on the student’s person, capture on-field movement which is converted to data.

Both data are then studied by the teacher to determine progress of the student in all areas of development, and an assessment is done which helps students understand their strengths and weaknesses.

University Placements

Our university counselling programme starts early for our students to make informed choices about their future subject choices, universities and careers. The university counselling department has one-on-one counselling sessions with students to guide them with university choices, college applications, their personal statements and college essays.

Our regular University Education Fairs help students connect with university admissions officers and learn more about their higher education choices.

We are happy for, and take pride in our IBDP students who have received scholarships, grants and admissions in some of the most reputed universities in the world. This includes Ivy League schools like Harvard, Brown, Yale and Columbia Universities, as well as other reputed top institutions of the world like Oxford University, Cambridge University, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technology University, London School of Economics, Imperial College, King’s College, Cornell University etc.

“When I joined GIIS in 2018, I didn’t expect to make any friends and was really scared of not being able to catch up with the classes. But to my surprise, everyone here is really supportive of me and helps me to learn basic concepts again. I was really happy to have teachers who I can rely on when I feel really low and unmotivated with my studies. Even now, in my last final year of the IBDP, GIIS offers me so many great opportunities and gives guidance to those who don’t know what to do later on. I have truly enjoyed my time in GIIS. Even after I graduate, I will come back to say thank you to my teachers who helped me so much along the way.”

“I'm very impressed with the kindergarten teachers' warmth and passion for children at GIIS. We are very comfortable communicating with the teachers. Both my children, Minjoon and Joonhee are very happy to go to school and meet their teachers and friends everyday. I can see their development from every angle."

I truly appreciate the management and staff at GIIS for their commendable effort in achieving a seamless transition to Home-Based Learning (HBL) during the lockdown and subsequent measures due to Covid-19. Every email from GIIS related to COVID measures showed how professionally they handled the pandemic situation.

“Every teacher and staff in the primary school calls Fuuko by her name when they see her. They all know her well and this makes us feel welcome at GIIS. Fuuko has good teachers and enjoys the school library a lot. From being a shy student when she joined GIIS, she has now become a confident learner who actively participates in her class.”

“Inspite of traveling from Dover everyday, it has been a pleasant surprise to us that Rahul, our younger son, loves to come to school and feels completely at home at GIIS. He is involved in many activities and sports in school and we are extremely glad that GIIS believes in holistic development of its students. Thanks to the teachers for instilling a sense of confidence in the students and encouraging them to make a difference to the community that they live in.“
